        Some possibilities that come to mind:

The narrator/protagonist of Bapsi Sidhwa's _Cracking India_  is stricken
with polio and manipulates her handicap in interesting ways;

Anita Desai's _Clear Light of Day_ has a character with Down's Syndrome,
one suffering from diabetes, and another from delirium tremens.

Having read your essay on _Nervous Conditions_, I think you will be
particularly interested in Jamaica Kincaid's _Annie John_.
