Hi Joy,

I completely understand and agree with your decision on the newsletter.

Yes, I certainly hope to be in Montreal, given I live and work so close
(Vermont. I guess distance is a relative thing!!). In fact I would be
happy to help out with any arrangements.

I would also like to participate in any mentoring sessions. I come up for
tenure this year and could have benefited from any number of mentoring
sessions all these years. But I guess, better late...

One the kind of courses I teach: no, none of them are journalism or
amss comm courses. I only teach cultural studies. Since they are all at
the undergrad level, they have names like "Race and Gender in Media,"
"Film Genre and Narrative," "Feminist Cultural Studies" and "Intro to
Women's Studies" (last one team taught with colleagues from History and
Sociology departments). They all fall under Communication, but none of
them are strictly mass comm courses. I hope this answers your query.

In my race and gender course, an example of an assignment I use (and one
that has worked well) is: I make them watch 3 specific Westerns and
analyze the way the films depict prostitutes. Then I have them read
book compiling prostitute narratives or narratives about their lives in the
West. The assignment is an analysis of the mythic construction of
prostitutes in popular culture and a comparison to their real conditions of
exitence. Works very well.

Once again, let me know if you want anything done at this end for the
Montreal retreat.
