It is indeed a pity that the writer of that letter didn't bother to read
the many articles that appeared in many, many Indian publications critical
of the banning of Satanic Verses on one hand, and the non-screening of
Scorcese's film on the other. I had written the editorial in India Today
criticizing the banning of Satanic Verses. And many newspapers had opposed
not only the non-screening of Scorcese's film, but the attacks on Tamas,
Ghashiram Kotwal, Sakharam Binder, Kristhuvinde Aram Thirumurivu, and so
on.

As my letter to Sahmat noted, such philistinism runs across religions, and
one must take a stand against each such assault, so that those of us who
believe in free expression are not accused of bias.
