INTERNATIONAL SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
MID-TERM CONFERENCE OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION
RESEARCH COMMITTEE (RC 04)

        EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND CULTURE

University of Joensuu, Joensuu, Finland, June 16-18, 1997

         Background and Conference Themes:

Multiculturalism, ethnicity, race, and gender have become
vital issues in education and society. These issues are in a
simultaneous process of differentiation and globalization
within schools as well as on individual experiences in
societies. Education and schools are faced with the challenge
from several directions: education for tolerance and
understanding in an environment that itself is undergoing
considerable changes which originate from the new forms of
technology and social division of labour and the cultural
globalization. Consequently, the aim of this conference is at
tackling these issues from various perspectives. The
conference will focus particularly on the following questions:
multicultural and intercultural education, ethnicity and
learning experiences via life-histories of different ethnic
and social groups, new learning environments and knowledge
structures, etc. Therefore, the themes will be explored
particularly around and in relation to the main issues of
 Education, knowledge and culture.

The organizers of the conference invite proposals to be send
 in the following substantive areas:

 1. Intercultural education in multicultural society

 2. Racism and education

 3. Life-histories of learning and education

 4. Gender and education

 5. School as a crossroad of learning and living

 6. Vocational education in cultural changes

The registration fee will probably be $ 40 (160 FIM)
