     Are you thinking of Shahid Amin's work on the deification of Gandhi's
image in Gorakhpur as a consequence of the careful spreading of rumor and
gossip?  In that case you will want to have a look at his [Amin's] "Gandhi as
Mahatma: Gorakhpur District, Eastern UP, 1921-22" in  __Selected Subaltern
Studies__ ed. Ranajit Guha and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivack (NY: Oxford UP,
1989), pp. 288-348.  See also his later book on the development of the
national movement in Gorakhpur District.
