Subject: the 'millet' system

   Hi,
This isn't strictly a poco question but I have a feeling that there are
some people on this list who may be able to help me. I am looking for a
good discussion on what I believe was called the millet system. This was the
political system in place in the Ottoman Empire to administrate the
Christian and Jewish populations. As I understand it, it gave these groups
a certain limited autonomy in exchange for heavier taxes than the Muslim
  population payed.
In case you're curious, I'm thinking of alternative modes of governing
  'multicultural' societies.
      Thanks in advance,
          Jon (Stratton)
