The Indian writer, Anita Desai, wrote an excellent essay in the New Republic, sometime in 1984 or 1985, touching upon this issue: America's obsession with things British. It was written when "Upstairs, Downstairs" was being screened, as was the Raj Quarter and (I think) Brideshead Revisited; the fascination with Holmes and Masterpiece Theater, and Passage to India, being screened in the movie halls.
