		NEW DIRECTIONS: POSTCOLONIALISM, HISTORIES
				AND IDENTITIES

A Two Day Multidisciplinary Conference 22-23 September 1997

Departments of English and American Studies and Culture and Community Studies, University
of Sussex.

			_CALL FOR PAPERS_

This major conference seeks to examine the possible futures for post-colonial theories and
practices. What directions are possible with the field? Wher are we now with respect to
contemporary configurations of hybridity, cultural difference and diasporic identity
foramtions? How do the concepts of nationhood, globalization and neocolonialism transform
ideas of cultural identity? How important is the historical legacy of imperialism and
colonialism to our understanding of post-coloniality? How do issues of race, class and
gender inflect the future of post-colonialism as an area of study?

The conference will bring together both established academics and post-graduates at an
international level, as well as those involved in cultural production; film-makers, artists and
writers to discuss issues central to their work. The organizers welcome proposals for papers
>from any discipline within the humanities on the following themes and related areas.
