RE: Dahlia Reed's query about African-American travel narratives.  I lost
the original posting, so i can't remember if you were looking for travel
narratives specifically to Africa. If not, consider Paule Marshall's
*Praisesong for the Widow* in which an African-American woman travels to
the Caribbean and undergoes a transformation on the island of Carriacou
(Audre Lorde land).
