regarding your query on postcolonial and the gothic, I also thought of
Phyllis Shand Alfrey's recently re-published "The Orchid House."  It's
similar, in ways, to "Wide Sargasso Sea" -- old planter-class family in
decline, madness, murder.  The new edition also has a nice introduction/bio
of Shand-Alfrey by Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert.
