Subject: Postcolonial literature and madness

Hello Everyone,

I am planning to write a final paper on Anita Desai and Marechera,
preferably the latter, regarding ethnic identity and madness.

Bessie Head also comes to mind.

Do you think that for some "immigrants", alienation in their host country
and a complicated sense of their identity (conflict within between what
has been internalized vis a vis education, mass culture etc ie the
hegemonic mainstream, and what has been learned culturally - indigenous)
could lead to a type of madness? Or what is construed madness from eyes
external and distant to the reality of the person that is 'alienated' etc.

Sorry if this question or query is a bit hodgy....but I am trying to work
out an angle to approach literature from a perspective similar to what
I've tried to outline above.

If anyone has any recommendations, suggestions for reading, either on
madness, identity or ethnicity, literature, other authors dealing
specifically with this topic, etcetera etcetera etcetera.... I'm all ears,
well, eyes.....

Thank you, in advance,
