howabout maori alan duff's once were warriors, which was made into one of
(if not the) highest-grossing pacific films.  the film collapses a
cultural nationalist narrative with a feminist one, so that might be of
interest too.  duff has a self-reliant, up-by-your-boot-straps
mentality for maoris, and  he has been attacked by maoris and academics
alike.  --f
