Subject: Caribbean postcol novel

Hi Alpana
For a 'non-canonical' postcol reading (though I don't know exactly what you
mean by contestatory) I suggest one of my favorites, "Angel" by Merle
Collins (Women's Press I think). Merle is a Grenadian author, and the novel
has a semi-autobiographical feel. She describes the life and times of
Angel,a girl born into British colonialism in Grenada, living through a
series of postcolonial changes and challenges including the revolution of
1979 - 83. As a Jamaican woman, having myself lived through all of that in
the Caribbean, I can vouch for the brilliance of the way in which she
portrays the closeness and crises of the families involved, the women's
insights, the contradictions of the male political leaders, the richness of
the Creole that frames everything. I think you'll like it!
