Subject:  a BIG favor


Hi David, 
        I write to ask you, somewhat hesitantly, a very big favor.  I'm
applying for an NEH grant (deadline, May 1), and I wonder if you will write
me a letter of recommendation.  I realize that this request comes at a
particularly demanding point in the semester and that I am not giving you
much time. I will of course understand if you are too busy to write the
letter for me, though I do hope you will.  I am applying for support to
finish my book on British modernism and the crisis of the Empire.  If you
wish, I can send you an abstract of the book and the first three chapters. 
I will be out of town attending a conference for the next few days, and
look forward to hearing from you when I return.  Thanks.
