Julie,

Perhaps a recommendation from another non-specialist would be helpful.
What you may be looking for is literature which sits loosely in the
category "colonial discourse theory". Looking at my shelf, I can recommend
Said's "Orientalism" and "Culture and Imperialism" as useful starting
points, as well as Mary Louise Pratt's "Imperial Eyes", Jim Blaut's "The
Colonizer's Model of the World", Mitchell's "Colonising Egypt", and,
despite its title, a volume edited by Breckenridge and van der Veer called
"Orientalism and the Postcolonial Predicament". No doubt others can
suggest more focused readings.
