Dear Theresa, I have to agree with your excellent analysis of the cover art
(so much whiteness and femininity!) and your sense that this headline is a
racist shock tactic rather than a considered engagement with African-American
history.
After I read your response yesterday I kept thinking about how a similar
headline referring to a Jewish American intellectual or political leader and
concentration camps would be met with shock and outrage, while the HNIC
headline is supposed to be --what? A compliment? Ditto for countless other
tragedies that could be cute-ified to mark how far other oppressed groups have
risen above vicious oppression. Since it's Boston--not one of our more
enlightened cities when it comes to race--why not suggest they run a story
next month referring to Irish pols and the legacy of alcoholism? I'm sure
everyone would agree that such an article would simply be trying to open a
dialogue about whiteness. I hope you send your response--you've certainly
motivated me to do so! --Best, Jaime
