Subject: Fwd. Of Naipaul and Nadira

------------ For those who haven't read the New Yorker article, it's
about the breakup of the friendship between Theroux and Naipaul, his
mentor. Vicious writing. Much of Theroux's bitterness stems from
Naipaul's second wife, Nadira Alvi's dislike of Theroux. And this
Theroux asks us to believe arose out of Theroux having written a kindly
obituary of Naipaul's first wife, Pat, an English woman. Nadira Alvi (a
former Pakistani columnist) apparently caused the breakup of the 30-year
friendship between Naipaul and Theroux. Theroux portrays Naipaul as an
utterly irascible man, a misogynist, who hates music--all music.
Moreover, during his stints as a college professor in Uganda and
Wesleyan, Naipaul's attitude towards students, says Theroux, was
extremely contemptuous."
