For what it's worth - I think you've taken the bait so to speak and are
too charitable in your interpretation of US motives. In my opinion the
US does not want to bring down Hussein. Iraq is the world's 2nd largest
oil producer and until the US took them off the market the depressed
price of oil starting in '85 was huring the US and US allies. The US led
Hussein into doing reckless tings (poison gas[even helped him get the
technology], attack Kuwait[told him we would not interfere]) so we could
rightously shut down his oil - more or less forever. Now we pretend to
chase him but don't shut him down - allowing us to keep his oil off the
market.
