Dear shashwati, the smith/hoare intl. publishers 1971 editon of selctions
from the prison notebooks has a whole section devoted to gramsci's notes
relating to civil society, its a useful starting place to study gramsci's
ideas on civil society which are closely linked to his ideas on hegemony
and the nature of the state. the buttigieg english translation of the
critical edition of the prison notebooks is useful also because it has a
subject index which allows you to look at all the notes that refer in any
way to civil society in the notebooks. i think Buttigieg's Columbia press
edition in 2 volumes  may not be complete yet, i use the italian editon, by
Gerratana at the library of congress for reference because i read italian.
this off the top of my head, i'll try and put together a reading list for
you and post it. also if you have specific questions feel free to toss them
my way.  i'm preparing a Gramsci for beginners webpage so i'm in the middle
of resaearch on lot of different gramscian concepts.   a luta continua  bob
