HOUSE DEMOLITION IN JERUSALEM'S BEIT HANINA

30 November 1998

On 29 November 1998, the house of 65-year-old Sharif Ahmad Muhammad
Abdallah and his family was destroyed by the Israeli army in Beit
Hanina, in East Jerusalem. The owner of the house had tried to
obtain from the Jerusalem Municipality a permit to build but it was
denied on the basis that the area of Beit Hanina is a "green area"
and therefore restricted to development. Mr Abdallah started
building the house on a family-owned plot of land 7 months ago. The
area of the house of two floors covered over one dunum. The total
costs of the land and the building of the house amounted to 340.000
US dollars.

Mr Abdallah, who was living in the house with this wife, his
sister-in-law and four children aged between one month and one year,
had been informed by his lawyer on 21 November that the Israeli High
Court had rejected appeal against the refusal of a building permit.
On 25 November, Mr Abdallah was informed by the Jerusalem
Municipality of an order to demolish his house.

At 7am, on 29 November 1998, Israeli officials attended the house.
The family was asked to take their belongings and to leave the
house. Five hours later Mr Abdallah's house was completely
demolished. No physical harassment was reported but Mr Abdallah's
wife was taken to hospital for shock.

In East Jerusalem, 96 houses have been demolished since the signing
of the Oslo agreement, three of which were destroyed during the last
month. House demolition along with settlement building is being used
by the Israeli authorities as a means to increase the Jewish
majority in East Jerusalem, thus manipulating the composition of the
population in order to cement control over the city.
