Subject: African women writers and their critics

Greetings all:
Happy new year!!
As I was assembling my lecture notes for my Gender and African Fiction course
I discovered that I had no idea when the first Book-length critical study of
African women's literature appeared. I'm guessing Meineke Schipper somewhere
in the 80's, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know? It would really be
interesting to know when the silence was broken.....Any ideas.
Thanx.
Best
Joe Clarke
