you are right, there is no good term to refer to people from the U.S.  No
matter what you say you are leaving somebody out or including too many in.

That's because this country (the U.S.) does not have a name with specific
words: 
"United", "States", and "America" are all generic and general.  

Has anyone looked into how and why and when the name was given?
