Keep in mind that the Germans surrendered 4 months before Hiroshima &
Nagasaki.  The Allies did completely annihilate Dresden, so I'm not
sure that they wouldn't have used the atomic bomb against them if they'd
had the chance.  If you don't accept the official explanation for the
American decision to a-bomb Japan (to avoid a costly ground invasion of
Japan), the common argument is that the USA wanted to demonstrate the
force of the weapon as a deterrent against the Soviets.
