While I haven't read Wicombe's work so can't directly compare it, I would highly recommend teaching Farah's Maps. However, I have a feeling that's out of print in the U.S. as well. It is an amazing work that does great stuff w/gender, youth, identity formation et al and also discusses Eritrea and Ethiopia pasts that are relevant to the current political situation. I'm going to teach it if at all possible next spring.
