Subject: colonialism and domestic social conflict

Hi, List,

Here's a query for you: I'm hunting references to the way that (British)
colonialism siphons/drains/vents excess, dangerous, unruly, 'unwanted'
population at home onto/into the colonies -- as mentioned by Bowdler in
1635-6 in a quite approving way as a great way of getting rid of the unruly
who would otherwise have a revolution (sic!) (qtd in Canny's horrendous
intro to the 1st vol of -Ox Hist of the British Empire-) and a fellow
quoted by Brantlinger in -Rule of Darkness-. I think it's an oft-discussed
point (I've seen it in connection with the 'second son problem' in Nina
Schwartz's essay (I think) on -Jane Eyre-, where she describes the failure
of the patriarchal social structure to work within domestic boundaries) but
I can't think of where the key structural analysis or important reference
might be. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Sarah
