The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate courses and to direct a post-graduate programme in Visual Culture. This is a new cross-disciplinary venture within the Division of Humanities related to programmes in Film and Media Studies and Art History and Theory, to programmes in other Divisions, such as Design and Information science, as well as other cross-disciplinary programmes, such as Performing Art Studies. Applicants should have a post-graduate qualification in Visual Culture itself, or a cognate discipline, but with a clearly defined interest in the development of Visual Cultural Studies. In addition the appointee would be expected to administer a newly constituted Department of Art History, Theory and Visual Culture. The art history and theory section has been established at the University of Otago since 1990 and currently has four academic staff teaching a full undergraduate and post-graduate programme. The appointee would be expected to administer the two programmes, assisted by staff members from a variety of departments throughout the university. This is an exciting new position demanding an applicant of academic maturity, with a strong reputation in research and with the sensitivity to administer a unique combination of disciplines within the School of Liberal Arts. The salary range for Associate Professor is $75,000 to $85,500 per annum and for a Professor is $86,500 to $106,500 per annum. The appointment to commence no later than 1 July 12000 or at an earlier date to be negotiated.
