Subject: personification of nations


I'm looking for literature on the personification of nations and other types 
of sociopolitical units for a study of Adolphe Braun's photographs of young 
women in the traditional costumes of the Swiss cantons (1869) and of Alsace 
and Lorraine (1870), represented as young women in traditional garb.  I 
welcome suggestions for general theoretical writings and also for material
