It does a wonderful job of explaining the basic ideas in very clear language, illustrated by clips from Arnold Schwartzeneger and Chuck Norris movies that exploit various stereotypes of Arabs. Said talks about how his office was bombarded with phone calls from the media shortly after the Oklahoma City bombing, and puts that nicely in context of the media coverage of Arabs/Islam. I used this video in my undergraduate general education class and was stunned by the impact it made on students. I'd say this video is probably the most effective tool I've used so far to make students conscious of such stereotyping. wh >Would anyone have any suggestions for a 16 yr old putting together a paper >on stereotypes of the middle east and its populations in the US with a >focus on, among other things, the racist (news media)frenzy that followed >in the immediate wake of the Oklahoma City bombing? > >Thanks, > >Jane Winston >-- >Jane Winston, Assistant Professor >Department of French and Italian >Northwestern University >(847) 491 8255 > > > --- from list postcolonial-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu --- --- from list postcolonial-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
