Rod Edmond's "Representing the South Pacific" might be useful, in
particular his chapter on the French in the Pacific. You might also find
Neil Rennie's "Far Fetched Facts" interesting. Karin Von Strokirch's PhD
thesis entitled "Tahitian Autonomy: Illusion or Reality" examines
colonisation in French Polynesia but is not strictly a postcolonial study.
