British Indians / Pakistanis appear to use it in a slightly derogatory, but essentially humorous, way. It's not an "amusing" term in the Pacific since it's a racial slur against Pacific Islanders. Like all the other labels that have been bandied around on the list, this one has different meanings in different time/spaces & is deeply enmeshed & dependent upon multiple histories, nations, class, gender, speaker, audience etc etc etc. Liz --- from list postcolonial-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
