Thumbs....go back and forth ...up and down...it represents a move from 
priest/ritual/religious format to a citizen/spectacle/social format.... a 
progressive "oppositional" link with pasts....

Strained....I don't think so....when we consider the metaphors of IV & HIV....
drugs & sex....instantaneous gratification and homosexuality and social 
death....and all the others metaphors that kill real people....
