Subject: Re: Multilingual films

Last night I watched Red Violin--Italian, German, French, Chinese and
English. The recent comedy Shanghai Noon uses Chinese, English, an
American Indian language.

I know this is further back than when you want to go, but 1992-95 there
were a number of films that used Indian languages. Last of the Mohicans
has a multilingual scene where French is used as the common language and
a British officer provides immediate/background translation for Hawkeye.
I thought it was an interesting move to see portrayals of Indian move from
inarticulate (How!) to multilingual.
