C.L.R. James on race, class, and America in Moby Dick, -Mariners, Renegades and
Castaways-, might be of interest--the book he wrote while imprisoned on Ellis
Island awaiting a ruling of either deportation or U.S. citizenship. (It turned
out to be deportation.)
