Please forward to any graduate student that you know. Ask them forward to me (jas80-AT-columbia.edu) their name and departmental and instiutional affiliation if they would like to sign. Thanks, Jeff LETTER: Professor Avigdor Shinan, Dean of Students The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Dear Professor Shinan, As graduate students who aspire to join the global community of universtiy scholars, we view with grave concern the recent decision of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to silence political protest and dissent amongst its students regarding the current events that are taking place in the State of Israel and the Occupied Territories. A ban on political activiy, including he denial of the right to free speech, the right to organize, and the right to demonstrate fly in the face of any possible conception of democratic political practice. Such a ban calls into question the integrity of the Hebrew University of Jeruslem, and suggests that the university is not a space of academic inquiry but rather an instrument of the state made use of to implement and censor criticism of the policies and actions of the state. We call on the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to immediately end the ban that it has imposed on political activity, and to support all activites that will ensure that all citizens of the State of Israel are accorded, at all times and in all places, the full rights which citizens of a democratic state ought to be accorded.
