From: jroos-AT-Sato.Helsinki.FI Subject: Whiteness in Europe? Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 14:04:25 +0200 (EET) Sorry the crosspostings Dear listmembers, I finished my master thesis called _Chicana Identities and Their Representations in Films_ and now I am planning my Ph.D. I would like to concentrate issues on whiteness, races and racism from gendered and postcolonial point of view. I have quite good knowledge about USA but now I would like make a slight shift and also to get to know whiteness and racism in Europe. I am planning to compare the situation here in Finland and Zimbabwe, but it will take some time, since my Finnish-Zimbabwean baby is to born in Spring. But as you can well imagine I will be pondering the issues of races and racism way into the future. Richard Dyer 1997, 13, in his book _White_: "...North European whiteness has been hegemonic within whiteness that has none the less been assumed to include Southern and Eastern European peoples...it is this overarching hegemonic whiteness that concerns me, one to which Northern Europeans most easily lay claim but which is not be conflated whith distinctive Norht European identities." I am also concerned about this hegemonic whiteness of Scandinavia. Is someone else interested in it? Have you done research about whiteness in Northern Europe? Especially I am interested in ongoing project and works-in-progress. Have you written or do you know good articles about whiteness in Europe? I would be more than glad to receive any kind of information. Thanks in advance Jonna Roos jonna.roos-AT-helsinki.fi I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood. - Audre Lorde - --- from list postcolonial-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
