I tried to address the time/space disjunction in an article a few yrs back
in "Ariel." The article focused on Patricia Grace's "Potiki" which is a
wonderful--fictional--place to start insofar as it addresses the ways in
which capitalist development grafts linear time onto indigenous space. Grace
does a beautiful job in depicting a Maori community's spiral, dynamic
space/time (which shifts between the urban and rural) at a moment of
cultural and material crisis. At the time, the best critical work I could
find was Johannes Fabian's "Time and the other". Liz
