Subject: African Films Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2001 14:08:35 -0400 < i am interested in african films in english which deal, in one way or another, with the former colonizers' (preferably the english) impact on their country, or have other postcolonial features (the empire films back). i'd appreciate anything, really. you might also go backchannel. michael> Here are two films that may be helpful for your project: HERITAGE AFRICA by Kwaw Ansah (Ghana, 1989) The story focuses on the psychological history of a man within an African/European dichotomy. As district commissioner in colonial Ghana, Kwesi Atta Bosmefi, who has changed his name to Quincy Arthur Bosomfield, gives up his African identity in favor of British culture and practices. Unfortunately I do not have distribution sources for this film. SARRAOUNIA by Med Hondo (Mauritania, 1987) The film set in the 19th century, revolves around the encounter between the Aznas of Niger (led by their queen Sarraounia) and the French colonial troops. The film reveals the violence and atrocities of French conquest and the heroic efforts of Sarraounia in resistance.
