Call for Papers for Second Annual South Asian Literature Association
Conference

South Asian Literatures & Cultures: At Home and Abroad
SALA 2001 at MLA, New Orleans, December 26-27, 2001

We invite abstracts as well as proposals for roundtable discussions and paper
reading sessions that explore the literary and artistic productions -
including film and popular culture - of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri
Lanka, and Nepal, both within and across national borders. We are interested
in papers that examine South Asian experience with reference to nationhood,
social and religious movements, cosmopolitanism, diaspora, ethnicity,
postcolonialism, and globalization, and through such constructions as gender,
class, sexual orientation, and identity. We will have one special roundtable
discussion on the life and work of R.K. Narayan. We will have parallel
sessions on the evening of December 26, and all day on December 27. This
year's Keynote speakers are S. Shankar, scholar and novelist, and Siona
Benjamin, scholar and artist.

SALA 2001 is a one-day conference with a very limited number of sessions.
Thus, the Selection Committee will make final selections based only on the
quality and critical significance of abstracts and proposals. Deadline for
abstracts of proposed papers, sessions, and roundtable discussions (400 to
700 words) is Monday, September 03, 2001. Participants will be notified by
September 30, 2001. Please send abstracts or session proposals in Word
Document or RTF attachment format simultaneously to all four committee
members:
Neela B. Saxena, Nassau Community College: nbsaxena-AT-aol.com
Shailja Sharma, DePaul University: ssharma-AT-condor.depaul.edu
Gita Rajan, Fairfield University: grajan-AT-fair1.fairfield.edu
Amritjit Singh, Rhode Island College: asingh-AT-ric.edu

All participants must be SALA members by October 15, 2001. Please send your
new membership or renewal dues to Dr. Gita Rajan, Secretary/Treasurer,
Department of English, Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT 06430. Membership
dues are $20.00 per year. SALA membership benefits include a subscription to
SOUTH ASIAN REVIEW, a peer-reviewed journal of South Asian literatures and
cultures. For further information on the journal, please contact Editor Dr.
Kamal D. Verma, Department of English, University of
Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Hotel Information: Once again, SALA has arranged jointly with ANS (American
Name Society) excellent rates for a hotel in the MLA conference area.
Ambassador Hotel is available to SALA Conference participants at $69 per
night (S/D) from the 25th to the 30th of December (both days inclusive). The
reservation number is 888-527-5271 or 504-527-5271. Please mention ANS or
SALA to get the special rate. Since there are only a limited number of rooms
reserved jointly for SALA and ANS, we urge all those planning to attend or
participate in SALA conference to reserve their rooms as early as possible.
