I read Miriam Schacht's recent posting with great interest.

Could she (or someone else) please cite the sources for the (accuracy of the) statment [see below] she included from somebody else's posting.  Since this notion seems now to be morphing into something like a canonical truth on this list, I think it would be very helpful if those in the know on these matters would kindly share with the rest of us how they know what they know.  This too strikes me as a not unimportant aspect of poco epistemology.

In short, I'd like the footnotes!  And, as I am sure everyone religiously points out to students, anecdotal evicence does not qualify as legitimate source material for broad generalization.
