Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 14:55:14 -0400 From: Mark LeVine <mark.levine-AT-iue.it> Subject: hard data on evil... now that we're about to rid the world of evildoers, does anyone have any suggestions of where one can quickly find accessible information, on the web (preferred) or in print, that can be used for interviews, writing editorials, referring friends and relatives to, on issues such as: 1. US arms sales to the ME by country during the last five decades, 2. poverty rates and other measures of development for the region, and how it relates to imf/wb aid 3. our history of using 'unsavory characters' which congress is now suggesting the CIA should 'return' to using (what's bin laden, then?) 4. number of people killed and made refugees in wars in the middle east 5. numbers of civilians killed by the us military or its allies in the region, and in other conflicts as well--panama, cambodia/vietnam, etc. 6. US foreign-assistance to countries in the region and how it breaks down--military, 'civilian', etc. i think it's is crucial that we arm ourselves with the facts before our government finishes arming itself for our new war... mark -- Mark LeVine, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Dept. of History University of California, Irvine Contact information, Summer-Fall 2001: 32-22 204th Street Bayside, NY 11361, USA 718 423 7357 718 423 2229 - fax <mark.levine-AT-iue.it> --- from list postcolonial-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
