Subject: RE: Rushdie Banned from Flying

Rushdie cancelled a scheduled reading sponsored by Elliott Bay Books
in Seattle for last night. Their Web site contains this announcement:

September 13, 2001

To:	All concerned
From:	Rick Simonson, Elliott Bay Book Co.
Karen Maeda Allman
206/624-6600

12:30 p.m.

We have just been notified by Random House that Salman Rushdie's
reading appearance, scheduled for Sept. 18 at Town Hall, has been
cancelled. While the current uncertain transportation situation is
part of the reason, the overriding one is the feeling (by author and
publisher) that the subject matter of Mr. Rushdie's new book - a
satire of contemporary New York - isn't appropriate to be making
reading appearances for at the present time.

Random House publicity people said there is a possibility this
appearance would be rescheduled. That will be looked at another day.

Interesting that he seems to be going ahead with the Canadian part of
his tour, if that is in fact true.
