The Arrow of the Blue-Skinned God, by Jonah Blank, is also worth a look. It
is a travelogue through contemporary India, the cult of Rama (post-Ayodhya),
and Ramayana's importance in Indian/Hindu life. Also, the Singapore Art
Museum had an exhibition of SE Asian Ramayana, shown in 1996 or 1997. It was
curated by Gauri Krishnan. If you go to the Singapore Govt website, or do a
google search, you will find access to Singapore's museums. (I think try
www.nhb.gov.sg, or www.nhb.org.sg -- which is the Natl Heritage Board site).
Then click on the museum for SE Asian art, and perhaps, there are details
about the exhibition. Its catalogue had an excellent article about the many
versions of Ramayana, including the Thai Ramakien, the Kelantanese version,
as well as the Ramayana imagery in Vietnam.
