Dear Salil,

Thank you for your kind words, even if we are not in agreement. I
appreciate it more than you know.

I am an equal opportunity bad speller, which is why I always circulate
drafts of my stuff before printing. I misspelled both  Rushdie's name and
that of the movie Memento! Thanks for the catch.

As to shortening the letter, to tell you the truth, I don't really believe
the Times wants to print what I've written in any condition. I posted it to
this list to let others know that they weren't alone in their concerns. But
in all honesty, I wrote my letter to clear my head more (and to show my
students) more than anything else at this point.
