In reply to Miriam's sentiments I too am worried about the reaction Arab
nations and Arab people in the US will receive in light of this morning's
attacks. The absolute worst thing NBC could have done was to show footage of
Palestinians in the Middle East jumping and smiling exuberantly in the
streets. Sure at the same time they were saying that there is no apparent
tie to any particular organization or group of people but a picture is worth
a thousand words and I just know that the images of Palestinian children
waving their flag and other showing peace signs will create in the American
psyche a target for which retaliation for this morning's catastrophe can be
directed. Justice is justice but to condemn an entire group for the actions
of a few is always wrong. I can only hope that no one in the media is
intentionally trying to create that fiend towards whom America can direct
its anger.

us today like the coil of a snake from which one cannot get out, no matter
how much one tries. I wish therefore to wrestle with the snake. -Mahatma

So many things to say!!!

The sentiments expressed on the bus this morning as I rode in to work (in
Austin, Texas) were frightening. In conversations, people were calling for
"another Hiroshima" against the Palestinians, and for all kinds of
retributive attacks. This is no surprise, I suppose, as terrorist attacks of
all kinds are here immediately supposed to be Arabic or Islamic in origin
(remember Oklahoma City?), but nonetheless I find myself preoccupied, in the
aftermath of these attacks, not only with the lives that were lost but with
what this is going to mean for the safety of people in this country and in
other countries who are presumed to be connected to these attacks because
they appear to be Arab and/or Muslim. I would like to be able to hope that I
am just being paranoid.

Miriam
