Mark,
Elleke Boehmer's anthology "Empire Writing" (Oxford UP) might be a good
place to start. There's also an anthology of 'South Seas' writing ed by
Jonathan Lamb but I am not sure if it includes Euro histories of the region.
Froude's travel narratives of the West Indies and Oceania were certainly
perceived as histories and are wonderful teaching materials. Liz
