I agree. And I also heard this rumour--perpetuated as Israeli rather than
Jewish workers. I heard from one news source that this rumour came about
because there was some confusion as to how many missing nationals were being
claimed by Israel just after the attacks. (Not that it makes any sense that
4000 missing Israelis would translate into 4000 absent Israelis from the
building on that day). There's also another two lines from the poem--

Who know why Five Israelis was filming the explosion
> > And cracking they sides at the notion

which has also caused some speculation. If anyone can send details about
this to the list pls do. What I heard (again, can't remember the source and
this is NOT substantiatied) was that these men were merely filming--like
everyone else with a camera--the disaster and were picked up by the FBI and
are still being held and abused. According to this source, the FBI denies
they are holding them but some of their parents in Israel have started a
campaign to release them, insisting they are being held and mistreated.
Again, I don't want to contribute to the rumour mill but the passage did
raise my eyebrow. Liz

>1) This is an allegation I've read more than once in letters to the editor
in Pakistani newspapers, but as far as I know it has no basis whatsoever in
fact. Unless someone has any evidence with which to substantiate this, it is
highly irresponsible to go on spreading it.
2) FOUR THOUSAND ISRAELI workers? Perhaps he means Jewish workers? Aside
from the complete lack of substantiation, it would seem to be crucial to
distinguish between Jews and Israelis. And, for that matter, between Israeli
people and the Israeli state.
I have no sympathy for the Sharonist state, but as scholars we cannot allow
this kind of irresponsible stuff to circulate unchallenged.
