Subject: suggestions for a Naguib Mahfouz novel

dear list,

I'm in the middle of choosing some authors for a course in the spring. I'd
like to teach a novel by Naguib Mahfouz that deals with the conflicts
associated with national, group, and personal identities. The class will also,
no doubt, discuss issues of diaspora, boundaries, and transgression, as well as
the psychological implications of authenticity and selfhood. Would any of his
novels be more or less suited to this collection of concerns? To top it off,
the novel shouldn't be too long; it's an undergrad course. Many thanks! Off
list replies are fine.
