It is certainly admirable of you to make the US
‘accountable for its inconsistencies and hypocrisies
around the world’. I would go further and say as an
American intellectual that is your duty.

However, presenting the case before the American
public, that the WTC massacre occurred BECAUSE the
United States supports Israel or because it imposes
sanctions on Iraq is both wrong and extremely
unhelpful to Palestinians and Iraqis.

I am not saying this is your position. However, I have
come across such highly reductive views in print since
Sep 11. The relationship between American policies –
Arab governments – the large pool of public resentment
in the Arab world – religions leaders – fanatics and
terrorists is highly complex. To reduce it down to B
occurred because of A amounts to a distortion of the
truth. Furthermore, I agree with previous posts that
many questions about the attack remain to be answered
and we may not have a comprehensive picture before us
for many years to come.

Christopher Hitchens is spot on when he wrote ‘Not
only is it indecent to act as self-appointed
interpreter for the killers, but it is rash in the
highest degree.’
