Silvia's recommendation is a good one.  But just to balance the scales a
bit, if Maldoror wanted to bolster her argument with the academy (oh, the
irony of it all), there are plenty of voices that would sing in her
chorus: Todd Gitlin, Walter Benn Michaels, Bruce Robbins, Santya Mohanty,
and I suppose (at times) Christopher Norris.  Those pop to mind quite
readily, even though some are more nuanced than others.  What they all
have in common is a refusal to let go of the concept of the universal.
And I think Maldoror is right in pointing to the denigration of that term
in most multicultural discourse.
