Challenges of Translation and Interpretation in the Third Millennium

Conference keynote speaker: Prof. Beverly Adab, Aston University,
BIRMINGHAM.

Conference theme(s): At the dawn of this new millennium, translators and
interpreters must reconsider their methodologies and practices in the
light of the changing boundaries that cyberspace and the Internet have
made possible in various vocational and intellectual fields, especially
in the fields of business, economy, education, and culture, besides the
numerous other fields of knowledge. The conference hopes to encourage
ways of focusing attention on collaborative solutions to these
challenges.

We invite contributors to answer the following questions:
1. How are Cyberspace and electronic translation shaping up the locus of
translation production?
2. What role should the translator play amidst the increasing emergence
of computer translation software?
3. Should translators and interpreters modify traditional theories or
come up with new theories of translation to meet the new challenges?
4. What role do translators and interpreters play in bridging the world
cultures?
5. What are the prerequisites for a career in translation and
interpretation in the third Millennium?
6. How are shifts in technology, international politics, or
transnational economics translated in a manner which preserves the
cultural identity of the source and target language?
7. How will the current movements in globalization affect translations
from and to Arabic language within the Arabic socio-cultural and
linguistic contexts?
8. What are the limitations of translation and interpretation activities
on the Lebanese market compared to the activities on the international
markets?
9. What is the role of mass media in advancing proper translations and
interpretations?

We encourage submissions of an interdisciplinary nature as well as from
various fields of translation and interpretation at both post-doctoral
and graduate levels. Presentations may be made in English, Arabic, and
French.

A one-page abstract should be submitted (preferably through Fax or
E-mail) by February 15, 2002, to the following:
